Women and Self Esteem: Are You Wasting Your ‘Energy Bucks’ on Negative Thoughts? 3 Tips to Earn

<a

Are you spending your universal ‘energy bucks’ on old, negative energy debt. Like so many of us, who wake up and carry fear, worry, stress and negativity in our hearts all day, we pay energy interest. You are always at complete choice as to whether you are earning energy interest or paying it. Come get 3 tips to earn it

“Energy Bucks”… what are energy bucks?

Imagine that at the beginning of each new day, the universe gives you access to a large sum of personal energy to use however you want. Lets call this ‘energy bucks.’

With these ‘energy bucks’ you can create love, happiness, joy, strong relationships, satisfying careers… any thing you want. You are at complete choice as to how you will allocate your ‘energy bucks’.

You are also at complete choice to create problems, frustrations, conflict, unhealthy relationships, worry, stress… anything negative you want.

And, just like our earthly banking system; some activities earn interest and some cost interest.

Examples of earning ‘energy bucks interest’ would be, cultivating an attitude of gratitude, believing your positive affirmations, daydreaming about how great it is to have what you want, actively thinking about love of any kind… you get the picture…

The pay off of earning ‘energy bucks’ could include being happy all day at work, looking forward to spending time with your family, loving a bit of time to yourself to have a cup of tea, read of journal, take a bubble bath and paint your toenails.

In contrast:
Just like owing interest on old debt, and unresolved debt, you will be paying ‘energy bucks interest’ on your unresolved emotional debt. So, if you carry old resentments, worry, anger and stress you are spending from your precious supply of ‘energy bucks’.

Lets say you receive $1000.00 ‘energy bucks’ each day just for waking up. But… certain things cost you ‘energy bucks interest’.

- Old unresolved resentments: $100.00 each
- Worry about the world economic condition: (you worry a lot) $200.00
- Self critical thinking: (low self esteem, poor body image etc..) $200.00
- Judgments of others: $50.00 each
- Worry about finances: $200.00

You can see that with this analogy, you could be broke before you get out of bed in the morning.

Here is the thing… energy that you spend on the above negative focus is energy that you do not have available for other more enjoyable pursuits.

If your ‘energy bucks bank account’ is low, or even in the overdraft, what do you have available for your spouse, your kids, your work or your friends?

You can see how important it is to do what ever you need to do, to resolve old energy debt.

Here are 3 Tips to Earn:

Decide that your happiness is The most important thing
Consciously focus on what is right in the world
Consciously focus on what is right in your world

Do your inner work
Release resentments
Become accepting of others and let go of judgments
Resolve what needs resolving

Cultivate Daily Positive Living Habits
Cultivate/Strengthen Your Spiritual Relationship
Eat for health
Take a loving holistic approach to your self care practices.

Epilogue:
Everything you think, the words you speak, what you say to yourself in the mirror, the food you choose, the people you choose to spend time with, how you treat your loved ones, the connection you have with Spirit…. everything….. either adds to your energy bank account or withdraws from it…

You are always at choice. Choose wisely.

Namaste.

Four Myths About Building Self-Confidence

People who have self-confidence believe in themselves and feel that they are capable of achieving what they want in life, or dealing with any situation that they may have to face. They have an aura of self-confidence and self-assurance, which is apparent to others. People like to spend time with them; they feel comfortable and secure in their presence.

In contrast, there are many people who are reasonably talented, but who lack self-confidence. These people are victims of the several myths that surround self-confidence.

1. One of the foremost myths about self-confidence is that people are born with self-confidence. It is a quality that cannot be acquired. Nothing can be farther from truth. Self-confidence, like other skills, can be built. All that you need is right guidance and a belief in yourself.

2. There are others who blame their low self-confidence to their lack of good looks and poor upbringing. They don’t realize that self-confidence has nothing to do with their looks. It is a reflection of one’s confidence. The only way they can overcome this myth is by learning to believe in themselves. In fact, talent and self-confidence are not inter-related.

There are scores of talented actors and actresses who do very well in their professions but whose personal lives are torn by lack of self-confidence. It may sound contradictory, but this is how life is.

Talent can be an important component of self-confidence, but it is certainly not a substitute for self-confidence. So, don’t worry about lack of talent. Harness the skills that you possess.

3. Another myth is that self-confidence is directly proportional to the recognition and praise that an individual gets in his or her life; the ones who are not so lucky wallow in self-pity. Once again, there is little doubt that recognition and praise make you feel good about yourself, and boost your self-confidence.
But you can’t simply depend on the praise lavished by others. You have to work hard to earn that praise, and you can do this only if you are self-confident. The same applies to those who are not successful. They, too, can earn praise if they work hard and win people’s respect.

Such people should look at children. Children believe in themselves, and this gives them the self-confidence to try to do things they have never done before, be it learning how to cycle or how to swim.

In fact, no child comes into the world knowing all the skills. But it does not take long to teach children most of the basic skills. Then, why should it be difficult for adults to learn new skills or brave new challenges?

4. Another myth is that only self-confident people can afford to take risks. This again is not true. In fact, self-confident people are more realistic about their capabilities. They know what they can do, and what they can’t do. More importantly, they know how to deal with failures.

In contrast, people who lack self-confidence are afraid of failure. This fear prevents them from taking on new tasks. They constantly pine for the approval of others, and when they don’t get it they end up losing their self-confidence.

What is apparent is the lack of understanding. People must realize that self-confidence is a state of mind. It is not dependent upon a person’s beauty or looks. It flows from a person’s self-belief, and this belief can be built.

All that a person needs to do is to debunk myths that self- confidence cannot be acquired or that self-confidence is a byproduct of exceptional knowledge, skills and luck. Once they do so, they will find it easier to acquire the same magnetic powers that self-confident people have.

To discover how to overcome the #1 obstacle that will keep you from success and to get a free mini-course that reveals how to change your limiting thinking and how to increase the level of your self-esteem to set yourself free, go to

Building Self Esteem–Doing it Righ

There are two methods for one to build self esteem: 1. from his/her accomplishments, who he/she knows, what he/she does, financial success… 2. from self. Buildiing self esteem from self insulates one from tragedies of life as they happen whereas when self esteem is from other sources, life crisises can destroy self esteem.

Building Self Esteem can be a challenge. In my experience of conducting stress management programs and counseling for over 20 years, I found that roughly 99% of those I’ve worked with felt that they needed to improve self esteem. How could
this be?

It’s because most of us have been taught to base our self-worth on our accomplishments, skills, physique, financial worth and earnings, ability to help others… Little wonder then when we:
lose skills because of injury;
lose a close family member on whom we’re very dependent;
lose our financial nest egg because the stock market collapses;
do poorly in a course of study;
have a bad hair day; or
don’t live up to our own expectations…
we don’t feel good about ourselves and our self esteem and self confidence are challenged. Ultimately, this may:
jeopardize our health;
jeopardize our emotional well being;
set us up for failure mechanisms;
have us constantly trying to impress others;
lead to an identity crisis;
contribute to suicide;
cause chronic depression…

Why is it when there are so many programs available for building self esteem and building confidence that is there a tremendous shortage of those who have self esteem?

The answer is that if you analyze most programs, trainings, and techniques for building self esteem, you’ll see that they actually create the path to easily put your self esteem self confidence in jeopardy with the first calamity that comes along in your life.
Five things you might want to know about building self esteem.

1. Many programs focus on having you to:
Acquire skills.
Accomplish achievements.
Change you physical appearance.
Develop a talent.
Obtain additional education…

Building self esteem on something you can acquire can set you up for a big let down, life crisis, anxiety panic attack, and loss of self esteem because these things are not the essence of you but superficial. While you certainly will accomplish many things, when you build self worth the right way, you will never be at risk of losing your self esteem. While talents, skills, accomplishments and so on may come and go, you want your self esteem to be impenetrable.

2. Many programs emphasize affirmations. While affirmations are important, they can also be rejected or ineffective. One method of determining acceptance of a specific affirmation is through the use of a pendulum. It’s simply to ask your subconscious mind if the affirmation is accepted or rejected while holding the pendulum over a chart with directions for “Yes” and “No.” Sometimes it’s simply a matter of rephrasing the affirmation.

3. Evaluate goal setting. Yes, many programs use the approach of setting and achieving goals to build self worth. While it’s ok to have and achieve goals, goals in themselves can be a catch 22 in building self worth. Should you fall short of a particular goal, your self esteem is in jeopardy. While you may have and achieve many goals, your self esteem should not be dependent on them for life is more often about dealing with the plans that fall through than it is about making plans.

4. Many programs only educate the thinking conscious mind. This approach could take forever. The limbic (emotional brain) lags behind the reticular (thinking cognitive brain). When you choose a program, make sure that the program nurtures the emotional brain otherwise, the thinking brain gets smarter and you get simply frustrated because you just can’t seem to put the material into action. The Program you use should have techniques to bring the emotional brain up to date to agree with the new information the thinking brain is receiving.

5. Few programs utilize the power of hypnosis and subliminal suggestions and those that do, may not tell you what the actual suggestions are and what’s worse the suggestions may be counter productive. For instance, many use a suggestion such as, “I am not going to feel badly anymore.” Because of how the brain processes words, this suggestion focuses on feeling badly and is therefore counter productive. Or they may use a complex suggestion which is useless because the subconscious doesn’t process complex suggestions. Choose a program that utilizes hypnosis and make sure the program informs you of the specific subliminal suggestions.

For improving self esteem or building self esteem, it’s important to observe (not criticize) the sources of your role models’ self esteem. It’s important to also observe (not criticize) where your self esteem has come from in the past, i.e. what makes you feel good about you and what you need to feel good about yourself. Thus you’ll understand the psychology of self worth and the causes of low self esteem.

The next step in restoring self esteem and beating low self esteem is to meet your own best friend–you. It typical that we often think we are our own worst enemy. The fact is that you can be your own best friend.
Now, how do you handle emotions? I mean feelings of anger, uncertainty, confusion, frustration…? Self criticism in the past may have eroded your self esteem self confidence. You want to use negative emotional experiences to empower you in building self esteem through your experience of any emotion that life can throw your way.

Acknowledge your disappointments and your emotional reactions. Move through the emotional charge and use directional preference statements. Tell yourself that you want to:
learn from the mistake.
see the situation in from a different perspective.
forget about it.
And that even though you may be unhappy, you still like yourself.

This is your formula for improving self esteem on a daily basis.

Imagine Yourself Feeling Total Self Confidence

Self-confidence is a perception that can be essential to one’s successes throughout one’s life. In the absence of this characteristic, many people are unable to accomplish their ambitions. A variety of treatments are designed to aid individuals to rapidly gain and increase their quality of life.

Self-confidence is often defined as the ability to believe in oneself and one’s abilities. This trait is critical to an individual’s accomplishments throughout one’s lifetime. This trait encourages persons to believe that they are worthwhile and that they can succeed in their actions. Even those who lack this trait can begin to build their self confidence.

Without this strength, many persons become powerless to achieve life goals. They frequently are unsuccessful in interpersonal interactions, educational attempts, and work settings. They often develop a social phobia, and tend to be uncomfortable in group situations. People who lack self-confidence sometimes be reluctant to work to set or labor toward goal accomplishment; they firmly believe that they are likely to disappoint. They know that they are lesser or less capable than the people around them. They typically do not succeed because they do not believe in themselves.

In comparison, the individual who can gain self confidence will find himself or herself equipped to correct this painful trend and achieve treatment for this social phobia. This person then learns that improving self confidence causes sizable improvements in relationships and educational endeavors. Sometimes, an employment prospect may be a product of steps toward boosting self-confidence.

People may have failed to boost self-confidence for a variety of reasons. They might have had domineering parents, or been teased often during their school years. Some struggled educationally or socially. Others just had difficulty making friends or know the affirming support of peers, parents, or teachers. Frequently, these persons struggle with a self-image of inadequacy and incompetence.

Many times, people who were unable to gain self confidence during childhood have difficulty building self confidence in adulthood. They have been unable to learn how to accomplish this, and usually learn only when they look for the aid and support of friends or professional counselors. Too often, people have difficulty admitting the presence of such obstacles, and instead continue to strive throughout their lives.

A number of strategies have been utilized to help persons to boost self confidence. Quite a few styles of counseling approaches, such as behavioral therapy or group treatments, have been employed to teach people how to gain self confidence. Numerous self-help manuals have been published to coach individuals to boost self-confidence. Professionals offer seminars and retreats designed to allow others improve self confidence.

While each of these techniques are sometimes helpful, two other approaches that are not difficult to learn and incredibly helpful for the majority of persons who attempt them are confidence hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP. Professionals who practice confidence hypnosis are usually able to coach people to develop self-confidence and radically upgrade both their viewpoints and their capacities to achieve in life.

Traditional hypnosis (using post-hypnotic suggestions) is often quite beneficial. It is best with individuals who are suggestible and easily led. This type of therapy typically is not effective for persons who tend to be analytical or think critically.

Those described by this latter group, Ericksonian hypnotherapy or NLP therapies work much better. These therapies are great for effectively communicating with the unconscious mind, which is the center of our thoughts and feelings. This is because the resistance to suggestiveness usually presented by analytical people is bypassed.

An NLP strategy that clients are often taught to build self confidenceis known as anchoring. This is a natural experience. For instance, if you encounter a song from the past, and experience feelings of deja vu, this is because your unconscious related the feelings that you were having at one time, with the music that was playing at the time. So listening again to the music, the unconscious triggers the feelings connected with it. In effect, the song anchors those emotions.

With anchoring, clients are coached to recall a memory where they did experience the emotions of confidence. As they recall and relive those feelings, they are instructed to touch two fingers together. The unconscious then associates the sensations of confidence with this physical action. If the individual reports that he or she has no memory of ever feeling confident, they may create a fantasy where he or she does see himself being confident, and then anchor that perception of confidence.

After anchoring the emotions of confidence, in those situations that demand self-confidence, anchoring triggers memories of confidence that can be used in the current situation.

An alternative NLP technique known as the “Flash” is sometimes used to immediately exchange painful feelings, which are typically connected with a lack of self-confidence. Through this method, the individual uses the visual images that cause negativity, to trigger visual pictures to produce a constructive response.

For instance, the individual programs the unconscious to utilize the mental pictures that cause feelings of uncertainty, as triggers for mental pictures that will trigger emotions of confidence. Mental images trigger an individual’s emotions.

Everyone has goals, and desires. A number of persons are able to work toward these to achieve their desires. Sometimes, however, people let their low self-confidence to overwhelm them. Although it is true that NLP might not work for all clients, the large majority of persons who attempt this strategy report astonishing success in building self confidence. This approach is usually more useful than alternative approaches for most people.

Summary: People who do not possess self-confidence often find it difficult to succeed in the majority areas of life. A number of components cause persons to acquire social phobias or issues with incompetence. Several treatment approaches can help persons to build self-confidence. NLP is widely reported to be very beneficial by the majority of clients who have adopted this strategy.

Ten Tips to Increase Your Self-Confidence

Self Esteem and self-confidence are keys to success in any walk of life. People with self Esteem andself-confidence are noticed more. They achieve more. You too need to build your self-esteem and self-confidence if you want to live an extraordinary life. Here are ten tips that can help you build that self-confidence.

Self-confidence is an important key to success in any walk of life. People with self-confidence are noticed more. They achieve their goals relatively easily. In contrast, people who lack self-confidence often end up being losers. You too need to build your self-confidence if you want to do well in life. Here are ten tips that can help you build that elusive self-confidence:

1. Self-confidence is found in people who have a healthy self- esteem they know their personal worth, and act accordingly. A good way to improve your personal worth is to make a list of your accomplishments every day. You will be surprised to know how many positive acts you perform every day in life, but which you don’t notice. Once you start looking at this list, your self-confidence will boom.

2. Be clear about your goals if need be, break your goals into smaller, more manageable tasks. Pat yourself every time you achieve a minor goal. It will boost you’re a self-confidence, and help you achieve bigger goals.

3. Find a mentor who can help you reach your goal most people, who have done well in life, have a mentor who has traveled the same road on which they are traveling today. Meet your mentor regularly, and seek his advice and support as a routine. You will find that you are learning something valuable every day.

4. Socialize with people who are positive and supportive, who like and respect you give them the same support and respect that they give you. Avoid people who are negative and critical of you. Such people erode your self-confidence. They make you look at your negative self, and not your positive self. After some time, you get enveloped in their cynical and negative world-view. Nothing can be more damaging than that. Dump such friends as soon as you can.

5. Pay attention to how you look take pleasure in wearing good clothes and being well groomed. It makes you feel good. People too look at you differently. Remember that every human being wants to be found in the company of smart, intelligent, successful people. You can soon be a centre of attraction if you radiate a positive, smart look. It can very easily make the difference between success and failure.

6. Don’t be afraid of failures take them in your stride and move on. Say to yourself that you will succeed the next time. Never make the mistake of allowing your failures to overwhelm you. They will force you into a shell, and destroy your self-confidence. A better way is to shrug your failures as something inconsequential, and take on a new challenge. Of course, you must learn from your mistakes, and be realistic about your abilities. People who try to over-reach often fall down. You should not allow that to happen in the name of self-confidence.

7. Keep yourself fit by exercising regularly and controlling your diet. A fit and healthy person is much more active and achieves more in his career. Physical fitness, like self-confidence, glows on your face.

8. Have a wide range of interests, and take an active interest in what’s going on in the world meet and talk to a lot of people. Don’t focus all your attention only on your work and on your problems. Divert your attention to new interests, and new tasks. This will keep your mind happily occupied, and boost your self-confidence.

9. Take part in activities that you are good at you may have excelled at things in the past and then given them up due to lack of time. Return to those activities again and see your self-confidence grow.

10. Pick up a new hobby or craft that interests you it will keep you occupied. It will also increase your self- confidence as you become more skilled in it.

Try to practice these tips as faithfully as you can, and see the difference in your life.

Self Esteem Determines The Person We Become

We may not realize it, but self-esteem is a great determinant of whether or not we will be a success in life or not. Why? Because self-esteem, or the way we view ourselves, including ours skills and our talents, affect our thoughts. And these thoughts turn into actions.

Taking actions are very important. Actions are the ones who move us closer to our dreams. If you have dreams and goals in life and you realize that you are not moving towards them then maybe you are not taking any action s or you are taking the wrong ones. What most people are not aware of is that thoughts and actions are linked. Having positive thoughts leads to positive actions in the same way that negative thoughts can lead to inaction or negative actions.

Achieving your goals and making your dreams come true naturally takes time. And the thing that can give you the proper drive or push is high self-esteem. High self-esteem can provide you the determination and personal power needed for you to take actions towards the achievements of your goals. Consequently, low-self esteem is one of biggest blocks to a person’s success. Why? Because when a person has low self-esteem it is more difficult for him or her to perform the right actions to achieve their goals.

Simply put, self-esteem refers to how a person looks at one self. If one looks at him or herself in appositive way then he or she has high self-esteem. On the other had, if a person ha a negative view of him or herself in including his or her abilities, then he or she definitely has low self-esteem.

One of the things that lower self esteem is criticism. The worst kind of criticisms is the one that comes from you. When you always criticize yourself it can lead to having feelings of self doubt. If there is one greatest killer of dreams known to man it is a negative thought. Nothing can be more destructive. Do not tell yourself that “I can’t.” or “that’s impossible.” Instead, believe that anything is possible and that you can achieve anything.

So how do you build self-esteem? Since thoughts are the roots of feelings and actions then you must always make sure that your thoughts are positive and beneficial. Instead of focusing on your failures and mistakes, why don’t you take notice of your achievements? This is not vanity. It is simply recognizing the things that you have done in the past and acknowledging your abilities.

Everyone has his or her own share of accomplishments ion life. The best thing that you can do is to get a piece of paper and list down your accomplishments for the last years. Remember all the challenges that you were able to hurdle and the obstacles you have been able to overcome. You will be surprised to know that you have achieved many things in your life already. In moments of great doubt, you can always refer back to this list and remember your accomplishments. You can continue to add to this list as you achieve more in life.

Always remember that there is a strong connection between self-esteem and success, so do anything that you can to improve the quality of your thoughts for it determines your future success.

When it comes to entering and maintaining a successful relationship, people often times do not realize that resulting problems and conflicts in the majority of cases are not actually “between the two”, but merely a reflection of their own personal issues.

A happy and stable person with high self-esteem on the other hand will generally perceive any given situation much different than a person who is rather insecure and doubting himself.

No matter if it is emotional baggage of the past, traumatic (childhood) experiences, bad role models etc, which caused the insecurity issues in the first place, the important thing is to become aware of negative communication patterns and then work on improving them.

Projection and manipulation are often times used as unhealthy means to “defend” and strengthen one’s position.

This unfair attitude makes sound communication between partners very difficult as it creates uncomfortable feelings for those involved.

An open dialog where both parties express themselves freely while feeling equally respected seems impossible at this point. Therefore, a confident and positive person is much more pleasant to deal with; simply because he plays it fair and allows others to be themselves, too.

Creating a relaxed and positive atmosphere around them, he/she will be perceived as a strong, friendly and independent person making communication easy.

Of course, this is not only true within relationships, but in any area of life where people interact.

Therefore, it is vital for any healthy relationship to know how to increase self-confidence, get rid of emotional baggage and develop new and healthy ways of communication.

Emotional and Social Development

Many theorists have suggested the emotional development of a child, or the core of one’s self esteem needs to be understood and fostered at home and in the classroom. Teachers and parents should focus on children’s emotional development or the ‘feelings that generally have both physiological and cognitive elements which influence behavior’ (Feldman, 2000, p. 329), at a young age. These feelings need to be positively reinforced to develop a high self-esteem through out the child’s life.

Most theorists agree that there is a link between a child’s development and their respective emotional levels. The views of the theorists also clarify the most influential stages in a child’s life when emotional development is necessary and how this development reinforces a child’s self esteem. A child’s emotional development needs to be built at home and school in order to develop a high self-image.

By the time a child is three years old, he or she is an emotionally complex person who has experienced a wide range of emotions. As parents, teachers, and caregivers we need to help promote our children’s emotional development so that they will be able to develop healthy relationships with their peers and learn how to manage their emotions effectively. This will help them get the most benefit out of their learning and eventually adulthood development. A child’s emotional development begins with the relationship with their caregiver. The type of responses that a child receives from their first caregivers (i.e. parents, daycare providers) will determine how that child will learn to deal with their emotions later on in their live (Ashiabi, 2000). A child who has a secure relationship with their caregiver will initiate positive interactions and respond positively to initiations with others (Ashiabi, 2000). Conversely, a child who has an insecure relationship with his or her caregiver will show more negative emotions while interacting with others (Ashiabi, 2000).

Elizabeth Cady Stanton once said, ‘Self-development is a higher duty than self-sacrifice’ (Quote, 2004). Having a good self worth or attitude about oneself can define self-esteem. Children with a ‘healthy’ self-esteem feel, ‘that the important adults in their lives accept them, care about them, and would go out of their way to ensure that they are safe and well’ (KidSource, 2004). In younger children, self-esteem is not measured by their self worth, but by how well the loved ones in their lives respect and respond to their particular needs. For example, children with a lack of role models or a lack of parental support tend to have a lower self-esteem because they feel that these adults do not accept or care about them. This is the main factor which children base their level of self-esteem on through out their childhood and then on into adulthood. An example of this can be seen in early childhood development of infants who respond and attach themselves to the adults who love and are responsible for them. In the magazine American Baby it states, ‘What’s usually the fastest way to soothe a crying baby? Snuggle together while gently stroking him. Your touch has an amazing power to communicate love’ (Wu, 2004). What this is pointing out is that the infant is responding to the trusted adult’s touch basing its emotional development on this form of communication and overall establishing the child’s future trust and self-esteem.

One big question about self-esteem is, ‘The more you praise your child, and the more self esteem your child will have. This is correct, isn’t it?’ (Cyperparent, 2004). The answer to this question is not as simple it seems. It has been said that if you continuously praise a child, it may make the child question the sincerity of that adult, causing them to soon dismiss these praises as ‘fake’ and eventually hindering their self esteem. Even young children can see through excessive praise and flattery (KidSource, 2004). This is very important in today’s classroom. Research suggests that we should praise, but also challenge and encourage the student to take risks. Praising your children and your students should be only one aspect of raising self-esteem. The main aspect of this development should focus on how, ‘Helping children develop self-esteem involves listening, accepting, and praising. Self-esteem comes from acceptance. Provide positive self-esteem. Help your children grow self-esteem’ (KidSource, 2004). A child’s self-esteem is not something imprinted in their DNA when born, self esteem is established and planted by parents and teachers through a lot of time, dedication, and positive reinforcement. Remember that a child, also, does not and really cannot develop self-esteem over night. Self-Esteem is something that is trail and error for each child and with the positive help and influence of parents or teachers, a proper and high self esteem can be established, building upon each event through out their life, representing their emotional development.

It has been established for a long time that emotion does play a role in learning (Gewertz, 2003). Recent research has also shown that a deliberate approach to teaching social and emotional skills in the classroom increases test scores and grades, increases students’ enthusiasm and motivation to learn and reduces behavior problems. Children who are distracted by emotional issues do not learn effectively (Gewertz, 2003). By focusing on developing emotional and social skills, teachers and parents can help students to maximize their learning potential.

There are many ways a teacher can establish a child’s emotional development. As we have stated previously, children build their self-esteem and emotional development based of the adults who they are close to and whom they spend a lot of time with. Teachers need to encourage children by building upon their self-esteem in their lesson plans so that their students will feel comfortable and confident with themselves. A teacher can make their students feel more confident by giving each child a specific responsibility. This is not only exciting for the child, but it also provides an opportunity for the student to gain some ownership of the classroom. A teacher can also show the students to how to learn from past failed attempts (Research and Children, 2004). In order to make this work, a teacher needs to let go of their instinct to overprotect the students and allow them to be creative and encourage any questioning. Building or growing a child’s emotional development is different than teaching it. Teachers also have to keep in mind that they might be the sole provider for this form of development if the child is not receiving it at home. Thoroughly planning lessons around positive thinking will help to reinforce this theory.

There are many lesson plans teachers have access to via the internet. Most of these can easily be adapted to fit a teacher’s specific situation. The K-5 lessons range from a ‘Who am I Collage,’ by Linda Bauck, which teaching the child who they are, to a ’self esteem/class pride chain,’ by Kimberlee Woodward, which teaches them teamwork and self worth. The collage allows the students to create and present a piece of work about them. This allows the students not only to talk about their interests and characteristics, but also to work on presentation skills with peers. The chain lesson plan allows the student to list five talents on separate strips of construction paper. Then with the teachers help they will be linked to form a chain. The students each present their talents to the class, then link the entire chain together. This serves as a reference point and a reminder throughout the year. A student can always look up and see that he does possess talents, and so do his peers. Lesson plans building child development can be found on the internet at sites such as www.eduref.org/, which these lesson plans were located at. Another route the teacher can look into is character education which is a theory based on teaching children character. Really the focus of the teacher should be to learn about emotional development then implement it into the classroom.

There are outlining stages for emotional development and children. Parents and by teachers need to understand these stages so that they can aid in building their children’s emotional development and positively mold children’s self esteem. Emotional Development is important to understand because it can really help the child all the way into adulthood. Amos Alcott once said, ‘The true teacher defends his pupils against his own personal influence’ (Quote, 2004). Teachers and parents are responsible for the emotional development of the children and the influence they share with these children can affect the children’s lives forever.

First time I picked up a paintbrush. I knew I was holding my holy grail. That moment was one of the few I remember from my days as a toddler. and would influence the rest of my life. I was painting on a daily basis before I even started school. and continued my studies of art and its many facets clear into adulthood. As a middle school art teacher by day and a freelance artist in all other hours. my life is dedicated to art.

I see children’s faces light up with wonder and excitement when they paint their first masterpieces. and I see the confidence and delight it inspires. When schools began cutting art programs. it broke my heart. Artistic expression of any kind is crucial to a child’s development. and should never be overlooked. Here are just a few of the many. many benefits art brings to a child’s life:

1. Counteracts boredom and stress. If your child is full of energy and has trouble sitting still or listening. encouraging the child to take up art is an excellent solution. If old enough. enroll your child in a local art program. Otherwise. set up a space in your home and fill it with easels and supplies. Painting and exploring various media (paints. sculpting clay. oils. pottery. crayons. markers. tile carvings. pencils. etc.) channels thought and concentration by teaching the child to develop a concept and stick with it. On the other hand. if your child is a little on the energetic side. sit him or her down with a ball of sculpting clay. Sculpting clay is a little harder than generic child’s putty. thereby requiring more energy. By keeping the activity fun. they will never know that you have simply taught them to refocus this excess of energy into a project. Reinforce the behavior by praising them and displaying the work. In addition. if you join them in these artistic endeavors. you will experience a fun way to bond with your child.

2. Promotes a healthy mentality. Child development experts often ask children to draw or sculpt during therapy. allowing them to analyze the child’s subconscious. Children tend to use art to vent their feelings. so by encouraging them to pursue this talent. your child will learn to identify and appropriately manage feelings and emotions. In addition. by pinpointing various emotions. pressures. and problems. they will be better equipped for effective and healthy problem-solving.

3. Develops critical thinking skills. To make art. a child must take a concept or look at an object. decide how they see it. and recreate it in that image. Whether they decide to take a unique and abstract approach or a classical. traditional one. they learn to focus on a goal and slowly work towards it. They must decide which methods work and which do not when matching the image to their reality. This not only breeds creativity. but pinpoints skills in life necessary for success like attention to detail. focus. patience. hard work. motivation. discipline. determination. and tolerance.

4. Enhances dexterity. Whether teaching to stay between the lines of a coloring book or sculpt a detailed face from clay. a child must learn to use their hand-eye coordination and the movements of their fingers and hands to yield desired results. As a multisensory experience. children are able to link both sides of their brains for an engaging activity that fosters logic and creativity. which must be completed through improved dexterity.

5. Improves self-esteem. All of these qualities combine into one that plays. perhaps. one of the most crucial roles in success: self-esteem. With a heightened sense of self and confidence in that self image. your child will grow into a successful adult. Confident adults take more risks. and therefore reap more rewards. Some studies have concluded that children consistently enrolled in comprehensive art programs are four times more likely to be elected to class office. four times more likely to participate in math and science fairs. and four times more likely to win awards for writing. In addition. students who take a few art classes tend to perform significantly better on standardized tests. like the SAT.

Hopefully you have begun to understand the importance of art. Enroll your child in an art program. or set up a studio for them at home. Even if your children claim to have no artistic inclination. take them to museums to bring that cultural influence into their lives. Make sure to nurture this talent; never force it or they may rebel. Always reinforce through praise and celebration. and the child will never see it as a chore. The lifelong benefits will speak for themselves and contribute to a more focused. disciplined. creative. productive. and confident individual bound for success.

So how do you stay calm, composed and maintain self esteem in a tough environment? Here are some tips you may to consider as a starter guide to self improvement.

Imagine yourself as a Dart Board. Everything and everyone else around you may become Dart Pins, at one point or another. These dart pins will destroy your self esteem and pull you down in ways you won’t even remember. Don’t let them destroy you, or get the best of you. So which dart pins should you avoid?

Dart Pin #1 : Negative Work Environment
Beware of “dog eat dog” theory where everyone else is fighting just to get ahead. This is where non-appreciative people usually thrive. No one will appreciate your contributions even if you miss lunch and dinner, and stay up late. Most of the time you get to work too much without getting help from people concerned. Stay out of this, it will ruin your self esteem. Competition is at stake anywhere. Be healthy enough to compete, but in a healthy competition that is.

Dart Pin #2: Other People’s Behavior
Bulldozers, brown nosers, gossipmongers, whiners, backstabbers, snipers, people walking wounded, controllers, naggers, complainers, exploders, patronizers, sluffers… all these kinds of people will pose bad vibes for your self esteem, as well as to your self improvement scheme.

Dart Pin #3: Changing Environment
You can’t be a green bug on a brown field. Changes challenge our paradigms. It tests our flexibility, adaptability and alters the way we think. Changes will make life difficult for awhile, it may cause stress but it will help us find ways to improve our selves. Change will be there forever, we must be susceptible to it.

Dart Pin #4: Past Experience
It’s okay to cry and say “ouch!” when we experience pain. But don’t let pain transform itself into fear. It might grab you by the tail and swing you around. Treat each failure and mistake as a lesson.

Dart Pin #5: Negative World View
Look at what you’re looking at. Don’t wrap yourself up with all the negativities of the world. In building self esteem, we must learn how to make the best out of worst situations.

Dart Pin #6: Determination Theory
The way you are and your behavioral traits is said to be a mixed end product of your inherited traits (genetics), your upbringing (psychic), and your environmental surroundings such as your spouse, the company, the economy or your circle of friends. You have your own identity. If your father is a failure, it doesn’t mean you have to be a failure too. Learn from other people’s experience, so you’ll never have to encounter the same mistakes.

Sometimes, you may want to wonder if some people are born leaders or positive thinkers. NO. Being positive, and staying positive is a choice. Building self esteem and drawing lines for self improvement is a choice, not a rule or a talent. God wouldn’t come down from heaven and tell you - “George, you may now have the permission to build self esteem and improve your self.”

In life, its hard to stay tough specially when things and people around you keep pulling you down. When we get to the battle field, we should choose the right luggage to bring and armors to use, and pick those that are bullet proof. Life’s options give us arrays of more options. Along the battle, we will get hit and bruised. And wearing a bullet proof armor ideally means ’self change’. The kind of change which comes from within. Voluntarily. Armor or Self Change changes 3 things: our attitude, our behavior and our way of thinking.

Building self esteem will eventually lead to self improvement if we start to become responsible for who we are, what we have and what we do. Its like a flame that should gradually spread like a brush fire from inside and out. When we develop self esteem, we take control of our mission, values and discipline. Self esteem brings about self improvement, true assessment, and determination. So how do you start putting up the building blocks of self esteem? Be positive. Be contented and happy. Be appreciative. Never miss an opportunity to compliment. A positive way of living will help you build self esteem, your starter guide to self improvement.
